"Come along, children. Let the grownups finish their chores while you go play. Jrixi?" She looks up from the trench she had just been digging for the new season's vegetables to be planted. "Yes Addiez?" She places both hands on shaft and waits for the draenei midwife to finish her request. Addiez gives her a warm smile and points to the direction the children ran, "Be a dear and keep on eye on them. Don't forget to enjoy yourself, you're still a child yourself!" Jrixi smiles and sets the rake in the hand of a male draenei farmer, "Yes Addiez." She proceeds to jog after the children and catches up to them at the edge of the northside of the village. "Itssy, Itssy!" Benie raises her bright green eyes along with her arms and open and closes her hands, a demanding gesture to be picked up that Jrixi cannot refuse. "One day, Benie, we'll get your pronun......pronun... Oh, I can't think of the word. We'll get you saying my name right is all! What game shall we play today?" Jrixi was [14] and already the height of the adult females of the village. It had been a painful summer, the one in which she spent weeks abed crying at the pain in her legs, arms and torso. Her horns, however, where significantly smaller - the only telling sign that she was still a youngling. "Dragon fire! Dragon fire! Pleeeeeease!" Jrixi chuckled, this game was a favorite among the children and Jrixi was happy to play the dragon. She was the biggest and most adults grew bored within the first two minutes of chasing the horde, belching "fire" and being trampled by little knights. "Ok, on the count of 8. 1, 2, 3..."
The game went on for 3 hours and left the children exhausted and ready for their midday nap. With Benie cradled in her left arm and Roin - a male youngster - half holding, half hanging on to keep upright with her other hand, she led the group back into the village. Addiez emerged from the commune hut, "All finished? Wash up and get to your pallets. I'll wake you in an hour." The children were too tired to protest and they went into the hut where most would skip the washing and fall straight onto their mats. Jrixi started heading back to the vegetable field when Addiez tsked at her, "You ARE a child, Jrixi. Leave the turning for the adults and off with you on your own adventure!" Jrixi shook her head, "There are no adventures to be had here. My parents are farmers and I'm proud to take up their trade. I'm too big to ignore the chores when I can help." She starts to walk back to the field when the horn blew.
HAROOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Everyone stopped, as if frozen in time. HAROO! HAROOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Tools were dropped and hoofs started pounding on the soil. "To the arms! To the arms! Get the mothers and children out of here. Get them to the river!" Diosk, captain of the defenders when he wasn't planting, stepped in pace with the defenders to grab their arms.
"Jrixi, with me. We must get the children." Addiez took Jrixi's arm and rushed them to the hut. Jrixi immediately went for Benie and shh'd her cries of protest, "Come along, we have to go. The dragon has come and we must get out of the way of the knights. Come one, everyone!" Addiez and Jrixi corralled the younglings and started for the southern path that led to the river boats to take them swiftly out of sight so the battle could be fought. "They've found us! Quick, everyone, to your stations! Here they- what is this??" Diosk stood in shock as the enemy that faced him was not the enemy he expected.
The orcs charged the village.
Draenei against draenei was a predicted conflict. The village was prepared to face their kin, they were not prepared to face their once-friend and the orcs were a mighty enemy to behold. Vicious, strong, cruel in battle. They smashed through the first defensive line and began cutting down those who were too shocked to react. They tore with teeth, claw and steel. The draenei tried blocking, tried stunning, they tried talking to their friends but it was no use - the blood lust took the orc and drove them to madness. They kept coming.
"The Light save us." Addiez hid the face of the child in her arms and began pushing the children, Jrixi included, to the river. "We must go. Now. No questions and no argument. Go." The tears were streaming freely down Jrixi's face. This isn't right. This should not be happening. They were our friends! Jrixi jogged as the children and Addiez ran through the village trying to get away as fast as they could. The screaming and clashing of steel echoed behind them. "I can't do this!" Jrixi put Benie in Addiez's arms, "Take her, take them. Go for the river!" As Addiez protested, Jrixi ran in a diagonal path back to the fight. This path led her by the armory where she grabbed a thick wooden shield and a farmers axe before rushing to the edge of the village.
The scene before her stopped her in her tracks and she grew very cold and very afraid. "Oh no..." Her parents friends, their neighbors, there was fighting and death and pain everywhere. The sight over-whelemed her and she ran to hide behind the nearest hut. She started to sob, "I'm a coward. I'm such a coward - they're dying and I am doing nothing!!" She sobbed and wiped at her face. Then she heard him. His breath was ragged and tired but his eyes, when she blinked through her tears to see them, were hungry. Hungry for her death. Jrixi screamed and started to back away before she tripped and fell backward. He howled and swung his sword down to her chest. Jrixi quickly flung the wooden shield over herself and the impact shook her arms and reverberated through her teeth. He howled again and started smashing repeatedly at the shield, it splintered and she knew it wouldn't hold for very long. A rage-filled cry pulled the orc's gaze up as Diosk body slammed him off and away from Jrixi. She scrambled to her feet and picked up the axe as the two locked in a one on one battle. Jrixi starred, transfixed until he scream, "Run, girl!" And she did. She ran south, Please still be there. Please, please, please! She ran to the river and heard the screaming before she burst through the brush and saw another male orc standing over Addiez's body, his mace raised over his head to bring a killing blow down on Benie as she cried and tugged on the corpse's dress.
The calm filled her. It was as if the world knew and tried to freeze time to stop it from happening, but she felt ignited. She pulled the splintered shield in front of her and charged as Diosk did. She charged and threw all of her height and weight into the body slam. It wasn't enough, the orc was stunned but did not go down. He shook body and roared at her, she didn't give him any longer. She positioned the shield parallel to the ground and swung with her shoulder hitting him in the neck with the edge of the shield. He gurgled but still did not go down and she slammed him again. At that he grabbed the shield and brought his mace down on it shattering it to a 1/3 it's original size and bringing Jrixi to her knees. Her arm cried out pain and she cried out in anger and frustration while the orc gave her a long stare then brought his mace up in his hand while his other held onto the shield, pinning her down. A rock hit him in the face, and another. Roin and the other children were screaming at him, crying, calling out bad names and throwing the river rocks as hard as they could. It was enough. Jrixi took her axe and sunk it as hard as she could into his chest. One doesn't need much to break bare skin and Jrixi had the fury of the village behind her. She pulled back and sunk it in again, this time it seemed like he felt it as he screamed, dropped his mace and smacked the axe from her hand. He backed away, pawing at his wounds. She picked up the mace, gave the blood curling scream and swung it at his head. She swung and swung and screamed and kept swinging until she was standing over him as he moved no more.
"Itssyyyyyehehehe!" Benie was crying and still tugging on Addiez's skirts, "She won't wake up! Tell her to wake her up! Wake up! WAKE UP!" Jrixi tucked the mace into her belt, grabbed the orc's forgotten shield and picked up the crying draenei, "Let her sleep, Benie. The Light has her now. She'll never know darkness and mean people again." The girl started hitting her while she sobbed, Jrixi couldn't feel her tiny fists for she was numb and so tired. "Come on children, onto the boat. Let's go." Jrixi held the river raft steady while the children climbed in and with Benie in her arms she stepped in, careful not to tip it. She put Benie into Dennin's arms and grabbed the pole and pushed them off the dock. "I'll come back tomorrow. If it's safe, I'll bring you all too." The children were numb and silent. The watched the small wooden dock grow ever smaller.
