Elves (all of them)
The generally held speculation about elves is that originally elves started out as trolls at the dawn of Azeroth, who where changed by the Well of Eternity (WoE) but one thing is for sure. All elves where once all the same race. One of Azeroth's oldest races, the elves have a history that far passes most if not all of the span of recorded history.
So this is the extremely short version.
The Well of Eternity
In the beginning, elves and all manor of beasts lived on the once single continent of Azeroth called Kalimdor. At the very center of this was the single most influencing factor on elven life as well as all life on Kalimdor, The Well of Eternity. The well provided Elves (who where super into magic) with immortality and endless magical ability that could be tapped into by those who carried the particular ability to do so. The WoE was also responsible for creating a pile of other critters that still live on Azeroth today, but that's a whole other post for a whole other topic.
In -super- short, The WoE blew up due to a few very silly elves and dragons making a pile of very silly choices. This is where the division of the elves came in. (It's also where the Maelstrom came from)
Night elves (Kaldorei)
Typically speaking, Night elves where a nocturnal race who settled along the shores of the WoE. The WoE ended up on some level mutating them and making them stronger and more wise.
Today, Night elves are in-touch with nature and having seen their brothers and sisters make the choices they did, ending up in The Sundering (that's that thing where the WoE blew up), they became leery of the arcane and dismissed it as something they shouldn't mettle with. They even went as far as banishing the Quel'dorei (high-elves in this case) that remained.
The Kadorei themselves have there own history that is torn an tattered through the ages but regardless, they are only in part what they where long ago. This particular model of elf isn't immortal, unlike their ancestors, and they are not particularly accepting of all the mutations that came from the darker moments of their kind.
High-Elves/Highborn (Quel'dorei)
Despite popular belief, these are actually two different things. Highborn are..well..For now I will say “dead” in a matter of speaking. Pre-Sundering, these where the well-to-do and most beautiful and wise and blah blah blah shiny stuff blah blah “Oh look at me I am just so damn pretty.” Don't get me wrong, they where bad asses in their own right. They fought and won battles over many nations and where super powerful. They operated under the rule of their most beautiful Queen Azshara. Post Sundering however, these guys ended up getting plunged into the deeps and then came out the other end as Naga. Yep, I said it. Naga where once Highborn elves loyal to their queen. Now they are snaky swimmy fish people who are very much still loyal to their queen. However, the old gods gave ol' Queen Azhara a make over and changed her name to Lady Vashj.(*) She's a 20 foot tall Naga (in some pictures with tentacles) now. Though highborn elves still do exist in the Keldorei culture, but it's kinda different now.
High-Elves are similar, but they carry a difference that is key. Remember those elves I mentioned earlier?(*looks up to Kaldorei section*)The ones who got tossed out? These are the ones I was talking about. Not all the magical elves fell into a giant shit storm. Since all the other elves where dropping magic to pick up druidism in an attempt to better the world they broke, there was no room for the arcane addicted High-elf. They then spread off around Azeroth and to this day, a few exist who where never tainted by...well..This is where our buddies the Blood elves come in.
Blood Elves (Sin'dorei)
Because being kicked out of their homes and sent to settle else where wasn't edgy enough, a good chunk of the remaining high elves settled on Quel'Thalas and named themselves “Blood-Elves” (Ok, it was a memorial thing) and started getting addicted to any kind of magic they could take. Fel included. Naturally, some of these elves didn't like the new leader, Kael'Thas, and remained
Quel' Dorei. So if you see a blue eyed blood elf anywhere they are the last of their kind, play nice.
There is a handful of pretty big differences between the high elves and blood elves. Physically, they are nearly identical, save an exchange of glowing eyes. Sin'dorei have green eyes as they are corrupted by fel energy from a willingness to absorb mana from any living thing they can, including demons. Quel'dorei have blue glowing eyes, as their addiction to arcane is fought daily with meditation. In more relate-able terms, High elves are addicted to crack, and will forever be such. They state their needs from time to time but don't go all willy nilly and blow up shit. Sin'dorei however, where addicted to crack, but now they also shoot up heroin and throw around pills like candy. They also invented mana bombs, so that's a thing.
So, Elves in high school would be all like:
Quel'dorei- Home team (Alliance) friendly, and skilled with Arcane magic. Quietly celebrate spirit day.
Sin'dorei- Addicted to magic in general, would put on a shirt that says: “Fuck you, and that dumb shit king of yours” to an alliance pep rally on spirit day just to start a fight, so long as the horde are watching.
Kaldorei – Outside the gym on spirit day looking at the trees and trying not to fuck up. Yet somehow you get the impression they are about to anyways.
So there you have it. I do plan on making posts that go slightly more in depth on many of the topics I open here, so this is more of an introductory thing. Also, if you wanna have me talk about anything else, let me know!
*Edit: This is actually speculation that Queen Azara became Lady Vashj.
